ChatGPT is the AI assistant most people have heard of, and OpenAI has kept adding to it: web search, image generation, deep research, agents, a coding agent, video generation, and team workspaces. That breadth is its biggest strength. It also makes the plan lineup harder to follow than it used to be.

This review explains what ChatGPT does, what each plan includes as of October 2026, where it falls short, and who should pay for it.

What ChatGPT Is

ChatGPT is a chat-based assistant. You type or speak a request, and it responds using OpenAI’s language models. It can also use tools along the way: searching the web, reading files you upload, writing and running code, generating images, and on higher plans, running longer research and agent tasks. It’s available on the web at chatgpt.com, in desktop apps, and on iOS and Android.

OpenAI updates its models frequently, and plan pages often name specific model versions. We don’t list model names here because they change every few months. What matters for buyers is that higher tiers get more access to OpenAI’s most capable models and higher usage limits.

Key Features

Chat, writing, and analysis

The everyday use is drafting and rewriting: emails, proposals, social posts, job descriptions, product copy, meeting summaries. You can upload PDFs, spreadsheets, and documents and ask questions about them. ChatGPT can also write and run code behind the scenes to analyze data files and make charts.

Web search

ChatGPT can search the web for current information and show source links. That makes it useful for questions about recent events and current prices. You should still open the sources for anything important.

Projects and custom GPTs

Projects group related chats and files so the assistant keeps context, for example one project per client. Custom GPTs are reusable assistants with instructions and reference files you set up once, such as a “brand voice editor” or an “FAQ answerer” built on your own policies.

Deep research and agent mode

On Plus and above, deep research runs a longer, multi-step web investigation and returns a structured report with sources. Agent mode lets ChatGPT carry out multi-step tasks on the web for you. Agents are powerful but imperfect. Supervise them, and be careful about what accounts or information you give them access to.

Images and video

ChatGPT generates images from text descriptions on all plans, within limits. OpenAI retired its standalone DALL·E GPT in 2026, and image generation now runs through ChatGPT’s built-in image tool. Plus includes access to Sora, OpenAI’s video generation tool. For a comparison with Midjourney, see Midjourney vs DALL·E (ChatGPT Images).

Codex

Codex is OpenAI’s coding agent, included with Plus. It can work on programming tasks in a code repository. Developers comparing options should also read The Best AI Coding Assistants.

Business features

ChatGPT Business adds a shared workspace, admin controls, SAML single sign-on, and more than 60 connectors to other apps. OpenAI says the plan is aligned with SOC 2 Type 2, and that business data isn’t used to train its models by default.

Strengths

  • Breadth. Chat, research, images, video, coding, and agents in one subscription.
  • Low-cost entry points. Free and the $8 Go plan cover light use.
  • Customization. Projects and custom GPTs make repeat tasks faster.
  • Team plan with sensible defaults. No training on business data by default, plus admin controls and SSO.
  • Available everywhere. Web, desktop, and mobile apps.

Limitations

  • Plan complexity. Free, Go, Plus, three Pro tiers, and two kinds of Business seat take some sorting out.
  • Usage limits. Even paid plans cap use of the most capable models and tools. Limits vary by tier.
  • Accuracy. Like every AI chatbot, ChatGPT can make confident mistakes. Verify facts, numbers, and citations.
  • Ads on the budget tier. OpenAI states that Go may include ads.
  • Consumer data defaults. On personal plans, chats can be used to improve OpenAI’s models unless you turn off “Improve the model for everyone” in Data Controls.

Who Should Use ChatGPT

Good fit:
– Freelancers and owners who want one AI tool for writing, research, and visuals
– Small teams that want a managed workspace with admin controls
– People who will use custom GPTs or projects for repeat tasks

Consider alternatives if:
– You work almost entirely in Google Workspace or Microsoft 365. The AI already built into those suites may be enough. See Microsoft 365 Copilot vs Gemini for Google Workspace.
– Your main need is research with visible citations (consider Perplexity) or long-form writing and code (consider Claude).

Getting Started Checklist

  • [ ] Start on Free for a week with your real tasks.
  • [ ] Turn off “Improve the model for everyone” under Settings → Data Controls if you don’t want personal-plan chats used for training.
  • [ ] Create one project for your most common recurring task.
  • [ ] Write a short set of custom instructions (your role, your audience, your preferred tone).
  • [ ] Upgrade to Plus only when you hit limits or need deep research, agents, or video.
  • [ ] For two or more people handling business data, compare Business against personal plans.

FAQ

Is ChatGPT Plus worth $20 a month?
If you use ChatGPT most days, or need deep research, agent mode, custom GPTs, or video, Plus is the standard choice. For occasional use, Free or Go may be enough.

What’s the difference between ChatGPT Plus and Business?
Plus is a personal plan. Business is priced per user with a two-seat minimum, and it adds a shared workspace, admin controls, SSO, and no training on business data by default.

Does ChatGPT have ads?
OpenAI states that the Go plan may include ads. Check OpenAI’s site for the current ad policy on each plan.

Can ChatGPT replace my other software?
Not usually. It works best alongside your email, documents, and CRM. Connectors on Business help it work with other apps.
