ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini are the three AI assistants most people end up choosing between. Each has a capable free plan and a main paid plan at about $20 a month, and each company releases new models every few months. So which one is worth your money?

The honest answer is that the best choice depends less on which model is “smartest” this month and more on the work you do, the apps you already use, and whether you’re buying for yourself or for a team. This comparison covers plans, features, ecosystems, and data settings.

Quick Verdict

  • Choose ChatGPT if you want the most features in one place: images, video, deep research, agents, custom GPTs, and a large library of connectors.
  • Choose Claude if your work centers on long documents, careful writing, analysis, or code, and you’d use Claude Code.
  • Choose Gemini if you already use Gmail, Google Docs, Drive, or an Android phone, or if you’d pay for Google storage anyway.

Pricing Side by Side

Prices below come from each vendor’s official pricing page, as of October 2026. Check the vendor’s site before buying, because plans change often.

Tier ChatGPT Claude Gemini (Google AI)
Free $0 $0 $0
Budget tier Go, $8/mo (may include ads) None Google AI Plus, $4.99/mo
Main paid plan Plus, $20/mo Pro, $20/mo or $17/mo billed annually Google AI Pro, $19.99/mo
Power-user tiers Pro, $100 / $200 / $500 per month Max, $100 or $200 per month Google AI Ultra, $99.99 or $199.99 per month
Team plan Business, $25/user/mo monthly or $20 annually (2-seat min) Team, $25/seat/mo monthly or $20 annually (2–150 seats) Gemini included in paid Google Workspace plans
Premium team seats $125/mo monthly or $100 annually $125/mo monthly or $100 annually Varies by Workspace plan

Two things stand out. First, the main $20 plans are priced almost identically, so the choice really does come down to features and fit. Second, Google’s $19.99 plan includes 5 TB of cloud storage, according to Google. If you’re already paying for Google One storage, that changes the math.

Features Compared

Writing and everyday tasks

All three handle drafting, rewriting, summarizing, and brainstorming well enough for most small business work. Differences tend to be a matter of style and taste. Anthropic markets Claude heavily for writing quality and nuance. ChatGPT offers the most customization options, such as custom GPTs and projects. Gemini’s advantage is that it works directly inside Gmail and Docs on Google AI Pro, so you don’t have to copy text back and forth.

Research

  • ChatGPT Plus includes deep research, which runs multi-step web research and returns a report.
  • Claude includes web search on every plan, including Free. Check Anthropic’s site for which research features come with each tier.
  • Gemini includes Deep Research on Google AI Pro.

Long documents

All three accept file uploads. Google advertises a very large context window (how much text the model can consider at once) on Google AI Pro, which helps with long PDFs and big files. Claude’s Projects let you store reference documents for repeated use, and ChatGPT’s projects work similarly.

Images and video

This is ChatGPT’s clearest lead in breadth. ChatGPT can generate images on all plans, and Plus includes Sora video generation. Google’s paid tiers include video generation tools, and its most advanced video features are reserved for the higher tiers. Claude focuses on text, code, and interactive Artifacts rather than image or video generation.

Coding

  • Claude Pro includes Claude Code, Anthropic’s coding agent.
  • ChatGPT Plus includes Codex, OpenAI’s coding agent.
  • Google offers coding tools across its developer products.

Agents and automation

ChatGPT Plus includes agent mode, which can carry out multi-step web tasks on your behalf. Claude offers Claude in Chrome on paid plans. Both are useful, but both can make mistakes. Watch what they do, and never hand an agent payment details or passwords without understanding the risks.

Integrations

ChatGPT Business lists more than 60 app connectors. Claude includes connectors even on the free plan, plus integrations such as Microsoft 365 on Pro. Gemini’s integrations are strongest inside Google’s own apps.

Usage Limits

None of these “unlimited-sounding” plans is truly unlimited. Each vendor caps usage of its most capable models.

  • Anthropic describes a rolling five-hour usage window plus weekly limits on Claude’s paid plans. Max raises those limits 5x or 20x over Pro.
  • OpenAI scales limits by tier from Go to Plus to Pro.
  • Google’s Ultra tiers are labeled 5x and 20x.

If you hit limits regularly, moving up a tier is usually cheaper than paying for two services.

Team Plans and Data Settings

For a business, the team plan matters more than the personal one.

  • ChatGPT Business: OpenAI states that business data isn’t used for training by default. It includes SAML SSO and admin controls and requires at least two seats.
  • Claude Team: two to 150 seats with admin controls. Larger organizations can move to Enterprise, which Anthropic prices per seat plus usage.
  • Gemini in Google Workspace: Google states that Workspace content isn’t used to train its models outside your organization without permission and isn’t reviewed by humans.

On personal plans, all three give you controls over whether chats are used to improve models. OpenAI’s setting is called “Improve the model for everyone.” Anthropic asks Free, Pro, and Max users to choose whether to help improve its models. In Gemini, turning off Keep Activity stops future chats from being used for training. Read Are AI Tools Safe for Business Data? before you upload customer information.

Is Gemini free with Gmail?
The Gemini app is free with a Google account. Gemini features inside Gmail and Docs for personal accounts come with Google AI Pro. For businesses, Gemini is included in paid Google Workspace plans, according to Google.
